What is the studio?
The studio is the daily creative work space of a novelist.
It is also…
… a quiet retreat space for those looking to rest, renew and heal.
… a creative workspace for visiting writers and artists.
… a private and comfortable place to sleep for authors and artists on tour.
… accommodation for artists during residencies, yoginis during intensives and teacher training, and others whose work brings them to Nelson.
The studio is offered to visitors by invitation, on a pay as you will basis.
It is also available for artists and writers and other creative workers to rent for exclusive use during times when Deryn is away.
The Studio offers:
- A work area with two, eight-foot long tables
- Sitting area with two arm chairs
- Private bedroom with a queen bed
- Clean and new (but very small) bathroom with a shower
- Kitchenette (mini-fridge, kettle, toaster oven, microwave, sink and dishes.)
- Access to laundry
- Ski and bike storage
- Off-street parking for one vehicle
- Lake and mountain views
- Garden produce in season
- Walking distance to downtown.
The studio is in use on most weekdays, from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
However it is empty in the evenings, and makes a good refuge for guests who are out working or studying during the day.
Weekends, guest will have the studio to themselves.
On occasion the studio is available to rent for exclusive use for several weeks or up to a month at a time when Deryn is away traveling. If you are interested in this option, please be in touch.
The studio is an extremely quiet place, and we ask that our guests live quietly during their stay.
The studio is the upper suite in a house. The main floor is rented to professionals and tourists who are in town for a few days or weeks at a time. There is some sound transfer between the suites, particularly in the main floor kitchenette.
Studio guests are asked to walk quietly on the second floor and on the stairs, and to respect quiet times between 10:00PM and 8:00AM.
Please no guests other than those registered to stay.
The studio and garden are strictly non-smoking.
The studio is accessed by a set of steep stairs, and so is not suitable for small children or guests with mobility challenges
Booking, Rates and Availability
The studio is offered by invitation for short stays on a pay as you will basis.
Pay as you will:
Guests are asked to “Pay as you Will”, and to leave their contribution in the wooden box on the work table.
Take a moment to consider the space and what it has offered you during your stay, and make a contribution accordingly.
If you are in financial flow…Pay as you will.
If you are in financial constraint…Pay as you will.
In this way everyone contributes toward a space that is offered to artists, healers and others whose work or study brings them to Nelson.
Guest contributions go toward utilities, maintenance and property improvements.
